Space planning guide
Space planning involves much more than determining how a layout will look. A good space plan will help create a workplace which makes the best use of your available space, improves work-flow and encourage steam collaboration.
WHY SPACE PLANNING IS IMPORTANT
When it comes to efficient office interior design , it’s important to consider how your space will be used and how the different departmental teams and job functions interact within your organisation. Factors such as imaginative furniture solutions, office and meeting space configurations, lighting and acoustics can make a very noticeable difference to any workplace, and can save money on expensive office space.
OFFICE AREAS
Most businesses now operate in an open plan working environment, perhaps with a few cellular offices for certain job functions and quiet working. Informal meeting and breakout spaces have become extremely popular, as not only do they require less space than traditional configurations, they encourage creativity, brainstorming and team collaboration.
BREAKOUT AREAS
Multi-functional breakout spaces are a great way of providing areas for employees to get away from their desks – be it for a coffee or lunch break, quiet thinking time, brainstorming or informal meetings. This type of meeting area when designed well, has been proven to promote creativity, team interaction, and again, is a great way of saving space.
STORAGE
All businesses need storage capacity, but try and keep this to a minimum – don’t waste expensive real estate on unnecessary storage space. Try and incorporate a clear-out as part of an office refurbishment or relocation. Consider off-site storage options for items that you don’t need to access on a regular basis, such as archiving.
RECEPTION AREAS
Consider whether your business needs a formal reception area. Would a welcoming “meet and greet” area with comfortable soft seating for waiting visitors suffice?
EQUIPMENT & IT REQUIREMENTS
Take stock of the equipment that you’re currently using and consider whether it needs to be the same in your new workplace. Perhaps you can save valuable space and reduce the amount of equipment required by introducing a shared facility or updating technology. Perhaps commission an IT specialist to look at your needs and recommend solutions going forward.
OFFICE FURNITURE
With a huge array of office furniture on the market today, choosing what’s right for your business can be a little daunting. Take time to consider your needs and speak to furniture dealers who are not tied to particular suppliers or manufacturers. They will not only be able to identify your needs and make recommendations, but should be able to arrange for you to visit office furniture showrooms so that you can see and try the products they are recommending.
