Our Projects

NHS

Funded by the NHS, Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust alongside the Cambridge Postgraduate Medical Centre, set out to extend their medical training provision. Investing in the new Cambridge Digital Health Training Centre, this new advanced simulation training venue required full design, build and furnishings, to convert it from a dated second-floor office to a world-leading healthcare facility.

Leading the way in innovation

With the increasing importance of digital extended reality in clinical training, this new centre was designed with innovation at its core. Our designers incorporated an Extended Reality (XR) Hub and Simulation Centre, to provide lifelike, interactive training environments to enable trainees to practice complex procedures, develop skills, and gain experience with diverse scenarios safely and affordably, ultimately improving patient outcomes. The XR hub was key to the centre’s innovation potential, with its fully moveable green screen, enabling viewers of online training to feel and experience training in life-like clinical scenarios.

Value for money from beginning to end

As with any project, especially in the NHS or public sector, it’s essential to deliver not only on time, but on budget, and with quality central to the build process. Our estimators and quantity surveyors worked closely with the client’s project team to ensure the project stayed on track, and every feasible aspect of the project was value engineered to ensure financial viability, without compromising on quality or performance. The client was highly impressed that the project was delivered within budget—an achievement made possible by our integrated ‘one-stop-shop’ service model, which ensured cost-efficiency without compromising impact.

Simple aesthetics with a functional focus

The workspace design was simple in its approach, with a clinical, clean style to suit the workings of the NHS. Their reception offers a light introduction to the centre, with a luminated sign on beautiful NHS inspired wallpaper. A nod to their secondary teal colour can be seen in some of the more people-focused spaces, including the two offices and pantry / kitchenette. Their ‘Lounge’ breakout area offers a further splash of teal in terms of the benching and chairs chosen. This is a fresh modern space in which those in training can break from focused work to meet for much-needed breaks and lunch in a comfortable and bright environment.

No limits to imagination

This brand-new NHS Extended Reality (XR) Hub and Simulation Centre is set to transform healthcare training and delivery. Inspired by the need to create a fully immersive learning environment, the fit out was designed to support clinician wellbeing while enhancing patient outcomes. The centre enables healthcare professionals to practise complex procedures in realistic, risk-free settings—boosting confidence, competence, and collaboration. By bringing together clinicians and tech developers, it accelerates the development of scalable, evidence-based solutions that drive innovation and efficiency across the NHS.

 A fully-managed solution

Specialist projects benefit greatly from using a full turnkey fit out contractor because it streamlines communication, coordination, and accountability. With all services under one roof, timelines are tighter, budgets are better managed, and quality is consistent across every stage. It also ensures smoother compliance with regulations and a more collaborative experience for the client. Ultimately, it’s a smarter, more efficient way to deliver complex spaces.

Advanced technology

Integrating mixed reality and immersive technologies, to make the new centre a truly next generation training and research facility, required our design and site teams to work closely with the centre’s digital and medical experts and external AV consultant. Seminar room 1, with its divisible wall, and seminar room 2 can all display and stream the same content, feeding in from the simulation room, with microphones, cameras and speakers all embedded into the rooms for ease of use.

All display screens were adjustable height and included touchscreen to offer ultimate flexibility for the trainers to impart their skills to suit the learning styles of their trainees. To top it off, CO₂ sensors were included to monitor air quality and optimise fresh air provision, helping maintain a healthy indoor environment while keeping systems energy-efficient.

Enhancing energy efficiency

Energy efficiency is built into this workplace design with integrated air conditioning and heat recovery systems that reduce waste and optimise performance. Zoned heating and cooling support a variety of specialist spaces—from the XR hub and simulation labs to offices and seminar rooms. Architectural layouts were carefully coordinated to meet healthcare standards while maximising comfort, with smart control panels and system monitoring ensuring reliability, ease of maintenance, and long-term energy savings for the NHS.
