Founded in 2014, Sherlock Biosciences strives to improve lives by bringing powerful tools for fast, accurate, and accessible diagnostics to all. They are focused on creating a portfolio of unconstrained, instrument-free molecular diagnostic technologies.

The brief

COEL was tasked with creating a project team that could deliver a specialist ISO 8 clean room production facility, Research & Development (R&D) labs, Quality Control (QC) labs and office space. As the client was working on developing a COVID-19-related product time was of the essence they required production to commence as soon as possible.

The Solution

A multi-discipline team
A team of project experts was pulled together including Bidwells inputting on Project Management, David Bedwell Ltd as an external Mechanical & Engineering Consultant and Guardtech as an expert in ISO 8 clean rooms.

The adaptation of an industrial building to suit a change of use and a much greater occupancy
Though warehouses present future occupants with a lot of flexibility, they require careful planning. There are a lot of extra considerations when converting warehouses to accommodate both offices and labs. For this project we looked at:

• Structural requirements
• Drainage and electrical requirements
• Ventilation requirements
• Contamination control
• Planning requirements

A flexible office and breakout space
Despite the labs and clean room being the focus of the project, the COEL design team managed to create an attractive office space which was conducive to both collaborative and individual work, including fixed desks, agile benches, single offices, booths and meeting rooms.
