January can feel long, cold, and a little heavy after the festive season. That’s why at COEL, we’ve embraced Brew Monday, a campaign led by the Samaritans that swaps the gloom of “Blue Monday” for warmth, connection, and kindness. For the past few years, our team has rallied together to donate tea, coffee, and treats to NHS staff at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, reminding everyone that a simple cuppa can make a big difference.
In previous years, Brew Monday has been a highlight of our wellbeing calendar. From homemade cakes to generous donations, our culture team and employees have worked hard to raise funds to provide supplies for NHS workers who often have to buy their own tea and coffee. Last year, we raised over £980, with COEL adding an extra £230, surpassing our £1,000 charity target. These contributions helped stock hospital departments with comforting essentials and showed our appreciation for those who care for us every day.
This initiative isn’t just about warm drinks and a morning caffeine fix; it’s about connection. Brew Monday encourages us to pause, share a conversation, and check in on one another. It’s a small gesture with a big impact, and we’re proud to continue this tradition.
Blue Monday is often called “the saddest day of the year.” In 2026, it falls on Monday, 19 January. The term originated from a marketing campaign but has become a cultural reminder of the challenges many face during winter: short daylight hours, cold weather, financial stress, and broken New Year’s resolutions. While the science behind Blue Monday is debated, the feelings it represents are real.
Rather than dwell on the gloom, charities like Samaritans have transformed Blue Monday into Brew Monday, encouraging people to connect over a hot drink. It’s about replacing isolation with conversation and reminding ourselves, and others, that mental health matters every day.
This year, we’ll once again support NHS staff by donating tea, coffee, and treats to Addenbrooke’s. We invite everyone to join in with Brew Monday, whether by donating to Samaritans appeal or simply taking time to share a cuppa with someone who might need it. Every conversation counts.
Let’s turn Blue Monday into a day of warmth, kindness, and community — and keep building a positive impact through the work we do and the causes we support.
