Thought Leaders Identified in COEL’s Research

The four organisations identified through the research showed that no single blueprint existed for adapting the workplace. Each faced different operational, cultural and employee challenges and developed its own response.

At the Bradfield Centre, maintaining the collaborative energy of a co-working environment was particularly important. The team adapted layouts and introduced greater flexibility while continuing to provide the face-to-face interaction many start-ups and growing technology businesses value.

Bridge Partners found that some teams worked more effectively together in the office, particularly where rapid communication and collaboration were important. At the same time, they paid greater attention to the wellbeing of employees working remotely, including maintaining healthy boundaries between work and home life.

For HCR Hewitsons, changing working practices coincided with a major business merger. Alongside supporting physical and mental wellbeing, bringing people together became important for building relationships and developing a shared culture across the combined organisation.

Bidwells had already embraced agile working before the research began. Its Cambridge workplace had been redesigned to encourage greater interaction between teams, with fewer physical barriers, relaxed client and employee spaces and greater freedom over where people worked.

Although their approaches differed, the case studies highlighted a consistent principle: successful workplace change requires organisations to listen to their people, stay flexible, and keep adapting rather than assuming one working model will suit everyone.
