Our Projects

WaveBreak

With their goal to break open a new frontier of treatment for the rapidly expanding and debilitating wave of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and ALS, WaveBreak’s new office and lab were designed to focus on their research and development activities. We collaborated with them to plan, extend and fit out their current laboratories and create an open, collaborative workspace for their team to thrive.

Research-focused laboratories

To develop their breakthrough medicines for treating major neurodegenerative diseases, WaveBreak needed to upgrade their laboratories. Located in a basement, the lab required a sympathetic design to expand into a larger space, considering every aspect of their research and development needs. The existing ventilation and air conditioning systems were adapted and modernised, with a new specialist close control AC and HEPA filtration system, in order to meet the clean room specification for the laboratory. The resulting work created a contained, bright, clean, and efficient lab, allowing employees to focus on their vital research.

Design for collaboration and catch-ups

The communal areas were designed to foster staff interaction and collaboration. A long, elegant table was the focus of the room, complemented by a stunning biophilic arrangement hanging overhead, which softly frames the lighting. Inviting, snug areas were positioned to one side of the table, offering a quieter place to sit —ideal for a tête-à-tête or some focused time alone. For more focused, strategic work, the boardroom was created in neutral shades, with industrial-style black frame glazing that keeps the space open and light while maintaining privacy.

Open and light with bold blues

The working space adjacent to the laboratories was designed as a soft antidote to the clinical areas, which required brighter lighting and a sparser layout. The office adopted a bold and daring dark-blue colour scheme, with this vibrant colour primarily featured on the desktops and walls, becoming a signature element in the sophisticated kitchen. Herringbone wood flooring adds an organic touch to the kitchen layout, creating a light juxtaposition to the richness of the colour palette. Ambient LED lighting enhances the dark blue palette throughout, with eye-catching large grey pendant lights positioned at selected table points to create an informal space.

Two translucent, glowing discs hover in a vertical alignment, emitting bright light and particles, creating an ethereal atmosphere in a dim, undefined space.

Stopping the wave of neurodegeneration

Neurology-focused biotech Wren Therapeutics became WaveBreak shortly after our design and fit out, with their new brand highlighting the company’s focus on “stopping the wave of neurodegeneration”. The integration of bold blues whilst black frame glazing partitioned the spaces, ensured the space reflected the breaking of waves, giving a gentle nod to the brand that was to come…
