Our Projects

Transition Bio

Transition Bio harnesses global talent to tackle fundamental health and disease challenges through its novel drug discovery platform. Their ongoing success has driven rapid expansion, necessitating additional office and laboratory space for their Cambridge (UK) team. We collaborated with them to design and construct a workspace that aligns with their brand colours and invigorates their teams both inside and outside the labs.

Connected, cohesive, and adaptable laboratories

Integrating extensive laboratory development with office space and communal areas posed a challenge, yet was met with innovative design concepts for Transition Bio. Glazed partitions between these areas provided visibility, fostering a sense of connection and cohesion to bring their growing team together. Their modern, efficient laboratories were custom-designed to meet our client’s specific needs and included the installation of microscopy and robotics spaces, wet and dry labs, and a dark room.

Vibrancy combined with practicality

The communal office areas were inspired by the biotech company’s branding, showcasing vibrant green, yellow, and blue hues that transition throughout the space. To balance these bold tones, organic elements were incorporated into the design with light timber cladding and abundant green planting, connecting the space to its tree-filled exterior surroundings. Gradient ceiling baffles not only complemented the brand but also provided essential soundproofing in the breakout space, which was enhanced by a bistro-style kitchen, inviting relaxation and replenishment.

Positivity and privacy at the heart of it all

Contrasting accent walls and contemporary furniture merged to create a vibrant, positive working environment. With adaptability being crucial to meet employees’ needs, we designed their space to include a variety of fixed desks, breakout meeting rooms, acoustic phone booths, and a large multi-purpose boardroom to ensure ample private space for both individual and group meetings. Light curtains in green and yellow tones added colour, distinguishing the different meeting rooms from each other.

A space that flows

Inspired by the significant impact of tiny fluid volumes combined with machine learning AI algorithms, the office and lab design for Transition Bio enhanced the spatial flow to create an innovative drug discovery hub. By incorporating biomolecular condensates, membrane-less structures within cells, their workspace was designed to mirror fluid dynamics. The use of glazed dividing spaces allowed for privacy while celebrating the seamless flow throughout the office and lab areas.

Standing up to the pressure of the lab

A positive pressure room was essential for this laboratory, with detailed technical specifications to meet high standards. This room maintains higher pressure inside than outside, pushing potential contaminants away and requiring incoming air to be filtered through high-efficiency particulate air filters. Additional research environments included a cold room and spacious storage and waste/prep rooms to support operational functionality. To avoid potential supply chain disruptions, it was crucial to have the capacity to order supplies early, make bulk orders, and store them as needed.

Lab planning to reduce contamination

Laboratory space was configured to ensure adequate separation of areas, prioritising the client’s needs, specialist equipment, and ventilation requirements to minimise contamination across their site. With flexible fit out options and additional HVAC capabilities, the Transition Bio team has the potential to grow and adapt to their scientific needs as they progress and innovate in the future. This adaptability specifically allows for changes in requirements or the use of interchangeable furniture and equipment.
