Our Projects

Biofidelity

Since 2019, Biofidelity have received much recognition for their ground-breaking work developing cancer diagnostic tests, with an aim to simplify the study and analysis of genomics across the world. They asked us to create a flexible and future–proof workspace – to support their ambitious expansion plans.

Adaptability, accessibility and balance in lab design

Creating the right workspace for ground-breaking research to take place means balancing a controlled environment with designated areas for employees to breakout and collaborate with colleagues. Access to natural light and fresh air are key considerations to provide a well-needed break from the stark conditions of the lab. To provide Biofidelity with complete flexibility, the COEL team planned, designed and fitted out an open plan office space, meeting rooms and labs.

Making an entrance

When planning the space, we were keen to provide separation between the research areas and the client areas. Bold signage has been installed in the reception space to welcome visitors and enhance their experience of the brand on arrival. Individual meeting rooms of differing sizes run off the reception area, which provide space to entertain clients, before progressing through the hallway to the communal staff areas.

Spacious room with wooden flooring, white walls, and large windows features the text "Biofidelity" on a light blue wall, under a grid of ceiling lights.

Employee wellbeing takes centre stage

Employee comfort and wellbeing was prioritised. The main communal area houses teapoint facilities and a breakfast bar, with a wide window wrapping around the back wall, to provide a panoramic vista and bring daylight in. This space can be used for lunch breaks, informal meetings, presentations, or simply an area for employees to collaborate more casually throughout the workday.

Scientists in lab coats and masks focus on research; one uses a microscope, the other examines a test tube in a laboratory setting with blue chemical-filled glassware.

The Power of Simple

Taking our cue from the client’s desire to remove the noise from genomics, our inspiration for this project was simplification. In interior design terms, this means a focus on creating calm, functional, and uncluttered spaces by prioritising essential elements and reducing clutter. The use of natural materials, clean lines, open floor plans and neutral colour palettes all contribute to the minimalist feel of the space.

Top notch facilities to support health & wellbeing

Lockers and a storage hall were installed; an external bicycle compound was built, and a dying room was developed for a pre-existing shower room to accommodate employees who wish to cycle to work.

A focus on comfort and safety

The labs were designed, complete with flexible lab benching installed with plumbing and power. To ensure quality and the health and safety of staff, the mechanical operations were reviewed, resulting in an updating of the HVAC system, and installing new fire alarms.
