Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I studied Quantity Surveying at university, sponsored by my employer at the time. I’d always wanted to do something that was a combination of business studies and engineering, so surveying fit the bill. I worked my way through the ranks at various construction companies from Assistant to Quantity Surveyor, then took some time out to complete an MSc in Construction Economics & Management at UCL.

From there I went onto become an Associate, providing advice in relation to delay, production, productivity and quantum issues arising on complex capital projects. I then moved into a commercial management role, and joined COEL in 2021 as Commercial Director. I’ve been very busy managing the Commercial team, contracts and tender pricing ever since!

I’m big on DIY and vintage VW camper vans. I have a beautiful young family and we try and get out in the van whenever we can on camping and road trips.

Sitting on our Board of Directors, Hugh has several years of experience in the quantity surveying space and a deep understanding of the complexities of the construction industry. Hugh also supports our Pre-Construction team with their tender submissions through to the running and finalisation of live design and build projects.

Overseeing the financial and contractual aspects of fit out projects, Hugh ultimately ensures profitability through budget management, negotiating contracts, and nurturing relationships with clients and suppliers.
