Our Projects

Sherlock BioSciences

Established in 2019, Sherlock Biosciences has transformed diagnostics through the use of CRISPR and synthetic biology. We were engaged to design and construct several specialized laboratories and clean rooms, integrated with office spaces, within a repurposed warehouse to enhance the development of rapid and accurate, disposable molecular diagnostic devices.

A foundation for growth

Overseen by OraSure Technologies, the company remains at the forefront of healthcare innovation, ensuring universal access to precise diagnostic devices. To support growth at Sherlock Biosciences, we were commissioned to develop a specialized ISO 8 clean room production facility, along with Research & Development (R&D) labs, Quality Control (QC) labs, and office space. This infrastructure will enable Sherlock Biosciences to validate production capabilities for proprietary disposable molecular diagnostic devices, which at the time included Covid PCR tests.

Adapting an industrial building to innovate

We frequently support ‘changes of use’ in our design and build projects. This particular fit out project showcased our design team’s talent in creating a new space designated for both office and lab use, while also accommodating increasing occupancy levels for hybrid and future staff. Warehouses offer future occupants significant flexibility, but they require careful planning. Technical design considerations included structural integrity, drainage, electrical and ventilation requirements, as well as contamination control.

A workspace to attract top talent

As a UK biomanufacturing facility, attracting top research and scientific talent was a key consideration in the design and planning of the space. The goal was to create an office and lab environment that fosters teamwork and creativity, reflects an innovative company culture, and promotes agile working. This was achieved through a mix of agile benching, collaboration spaces, single offices, booths, and meeting rooms for privacy. The addition of plants enhanced the vibrant workspace by improving air quality, increasing productivity, supporting mental health, and adding aesthetic appeal.

The Power of Light

As part of the client’s brief, we were to create a workspace that inspired and motivated their workforce by not only providing varied meeting and working spaces but also taking advantage of the abundance of light the building receives.

As a result, light is a key feature of the project, with floor-to-ceiling glazing creating a bright, open feel. A structural glazed floor connects the levels, allowing daylight to flood the foyer below and adding a striking touch to the entrance.

How we are
maintaining the space

The client required extensive commercial building maintenance for their office and labs post-project. Our Maintenance and PPM team now look after crucial aspects of their building maintenance, such as:

  • Monthly emergency light check and 3-hour soak test of emergency lighting
  • Monthly water temperature checks
  • Quarterly maintenance on the Argon system
  • Quarterly bespoke DI Unit Servicing
