Charity cricket match set to break fundraising record

On Thursday 6th June (1-6.30pm), COEL and Carter Jonas will once again go head-to-head in a thrilling T20 Cricket match at Fenner’s Cricket Ground in Cambridge.

With over 800 attendees expected to be joining us from companies across the region, we also look forward to welcoming friends and family, for a great day of entertainment.

Devon Malcolm announced as Carter Jonas vs COEL’s guest celebrity

We are pleased to announce guest speaker, and former English cricketer Devon Malcolm, a fearsome fast bowler for England taking 144 wickets in 40 Tests and 10 One Day Internationals.

We will also have live music from Tom Korni, a one-man band and superb musician who knows how to entertain a crowd.

Guests will enjoy delicious food and drink stalls on site including local brewery, Brewboard, Cantab who will be providing catering using locally sourced ingredients, and Toni’s Ices – all of whom have kindly agreed to contribute 10% of their profits to the fundraising.

Our chosen charities are LandAid and The Phoenix Trust, both of whom will join us on the day.

The Phoenix Trust will also be showcasing what they produce, from garden accessories including bird boxes, planters, paving and ornaments, through to their catering skills, with additional cakes and snacks available from their dedicated tent.

Last year’s inaugural cricket match, which featured former England international Monty Panesar, raised £14,500 for the two charities. Due to the support of our fantastic sponsors, this year we have already exceeded last year’s total, with £15,000 secured for these two wonderful causes.

With ticket sales ongoing and the exciting announcement of the Silent Auction still to come, this year’s fundraising is set to be our biggest yet.

More about Devon Malcolm

Few cricket fans will forget Devon’s 9-57 at The Oval in 1994. After being hit on the head by a bouncer he uttered the immortal words “You guys are history” to the fielding South Africans, before dismantling their innings in one of the great Test bowling performances. While raw pace earned him his place in the side, his famously eccentric batting at the bottom of the order seemed only to enhance his popularity with England fans. He took more than 1000 First Class wickets, mainly for Derbyshire County Cricket Club, and his charismatic style endeared him to the British public. Since retiring from the game Devon has kept busy and often supports various charities including working with a Chance to Shine Charity which promotes youth cricket in England.

‘We are delighted to be chosen again as one of the charities for the cricket day. We had a wonderful time last year being part of the event; serving the cricket tea, watching the match and chatting with everyone involved. This is an opportunity for us to meet new people in the business community, continue our very positive links with COEL, increase the profile of Phoenix and raise vital funds to enable to continue the good work that Phoenix does for adults with learning disabilities.’
