The response to the Way We Work research offered a fascinating snapshot of what the workplace meant to people across Cambridge as established working patterns were being reconsidered.
Hundreds of people representing more than 150 organisations took part, with the research considering the social, psychological and physical aspects of the workplace. While individual experiences varied considerably, several themes emerged around the importance of human connection, collaboration, wellbeing and having an environment that supports different ways of working.
Contributors highlighted the value of spontaneous conversations, face-to-face interaction and the energy generated by bringing colleagues together. Others pointed towards the need for balance, with workplaces providing opportunities for collaborative activity alongside quieter environments for individual focus.
Those observations remain highly relevant to workplace design. Flexibility has become an established part of working life for many organisations, but the physical workplace still plays an important role in bringing people together, strengthening relationships, and creating a shared sense of culture and identity.
